Throughout my career as an independent distributor, sales and marketing manager, director, executive, and still today as an educator, I value people and the networks I am a part of.

As I grew in my career, I worked to understand every situation, its context, and culture.

Experiential learning has occurred through the years of my successful progressive career. I have learned, communicated, and contributed many times as an employee and manager at all levels within the organizations I have served. 

During this time, I have made a few observations about learning and communication in organizations. Here, I share some of these concepts and how they can apply to your life and career.

As children, we were all asked what we wanted to be when we grew up. The University of Arizona Global Campus Instructor Holly Ourso not only knew what she wanted to do, but she was already doing it.

Bill Davis, program chair and assistant professor at the School of Business and Technology, overwhelmingly earned the most mentions and is the first to be highlighted in the inaugural edition of our new Faculty of the Month series.

If you have strong problem-solving skills, excel at organizational tasks, and are passionate about the development of others, you might consider going into the field of human resources. To help prepare you for a gratifying career, the online Master of Human Resource Management degree from the University of Arizona Global Campus is focused on developing the competencies and crucial interactive skills you need to become an effective HR strategist or possibly an HR manager one day. 

Derek was shocked. He didn’t get the job, though he was by far the most qualified applicant. In a follow-up phone call, his interviewer kindly but bluntly told him, “Derek, you have great skills and a beefy resumé, but you have trouble communicating verbally. We need someone who not only has skills but can sell those skills to others.”
    

A mentor is someone who can guide and share their experience while helping another person and is also someone who wants to see the person they mentor (the mentee) become successful. A mentor can be found in colleges, a workplace, and yes, even in your personal life. It’s important to understand what a mentor does and how this relationship may make a difference in a mentee’s life. While having a mentor may not make the mentee instantly successful, listening to their guidance and what they have been through may help.

According to Organ (2017), cause-related marketing, or cause marketing, is defined as “a type of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in which a company’s promotional campaign has the dual purpose of increasing profitability while bettering society.” In other words, “Cause Marketing occurs when a company does well by doing good.” Cause Marketing may happen as the result of “the cooperative efforts of a for-profit business and a non-profit organization for mutual benefit” (Organ, 2017).

The right to vote is clearly stated in the U.S. Constitution, right? The answer is more complex than you may think! On one hand, some scholars argue that the Constitution is more about preserving rights than proclaiming rights, therefore the right to vote is a given (Epps, 2012). On the other hand, some scholars assert that the Constitution is missing an amendment that guarantees a Constitutional right to vote and without this amendment, our voting rights are threatened (Soros & Schmitt, 2013).
