You might not know it, but you may have come across Vincent Vargas on your TV screen as Gilberto “Gilly” Lopez on the FX series “Mayans M.C.”

Known as “Rocco” by many, this TV actor and our June 2021 Student of the Month honoree wears many hats. He is also a father, author, and as an advocate for veterans, he is on a mission to change the conversation about veteran mental health and the often challenging transition from military to civilian life.

Thomas Stallworth II never imagined he would have a job working with a sports team he has cheered for since he was a child growing up outside of Atlanta.

Granted, he has been a fan of athletics ever since he can recall. His father played baseball; his grandfather was a huge fan of the sport; Thomas grew up playing football and baseball; and it became somewhat of a tradition in the family to watch games together.

The University of Arizona Global Campus Spring 2021 Commencement will be one for the books. For the first commencement as UAGC, we will be honoring all of our spring graduates in a special virtual commencement on June 6, 2021. 

While our graduates plan to celebrate their major accomplishment of earning a college degree from afar, they have an opportunity to think about just how far they’ve come since the first day they began classes.

Many Ashford University* students go from jobs to family to schoolwork all in the course of one busy day, but Navy SEAL Ty Smith sometimes fought the Taliban in Afghanistan for 18 hours and then debriefed his team before hitting the books for the day.

“It would literally be an hour between fighting the Taliban and transitioning to classes at Ashford University,” he says.

But the flexibility of Ashford’s technology and professors—along with Ty’s tenacity—made it work.

“Deciding to go back to school was really about career growth and progression,” says Timothy Renner. “I had finished my associate degree many years ago, but I never really took that step to complete my bachelor’s. And I know the only way to move up is to really own your own development.”

Biography

When Timothy Cathey graduated high school in 2012, he didn’t consider himself much of a student. As such, earning a college degree just didn’t seem to fit into his life plan. 

Instead, Timothy joined the U.S. Air Force right out of high school and became an Aerospace Propulsion Technician. It was while he was in the service that he began thinking more seriously about his future and how education might play an important role in securing a career after the military.
